This week we had an opportunity to talk with colleagues, friends, and/or family about what they defined as culture and diversity. In reviewing what we have learned so far in this course I think that one of the main things that others referred to in their definitions that was similar to those were that culture can be conscious or unconscious and that culture can be defined through a set of acceptable behaviors within a group. In regard to diversity, the similarities included simply stating that it can be exemplified as a variety between different groups of people. I think some of the things that we have learned in our class that were overlooked were things such as the ways in which these acceptable behaviors allow us to perceive the world and others. Culture is a big part of how we perceive the world around us and I think this is one thing that was omitted by all of the people I spoke to on this topic.
I think if anything, my own definitions of culture and diversity were expanded because of this discussion and not hindered in any way by it. I look at every opportunity as another way to help me gain more information that can be shared with others and help me look at things with a greater knowledge and perception.
