The country that I am choosing for the family is Ireland and I am thinking about them as though they are going to be entering a child care center.
Five ways I will prepare myself to be culturally responsive:
- Research information regarding their cultural background
- Schedule a home visit with the family
- Talk to family about child's favorite things from their home country
- Develop curriculum that enlightens and engages other children in wanting to learn and participate in gaining more knowledge about the country of the new student
- Develop ways to integrate the child's home culture to school by talking to the family for example about the child'd favorite food and developing a cooking experience from it.
I hope that these will allow the family to see that I am invested in learning more about their culture. I am not here to just teach but I am also here to learn and to share in the experience of having them in my classroom/program as much as they are. I would want them to know that this is a new experience for the both of us and not just them and I hope that there are some things that we can share about the differences and similarities between our cultures.
