Getting to know your international contacts
Since I have not yet received any response I am doing the alternate assignment. In looking at the website http://www.childhoodpoverty.org/ I began reading information on poverty in India. There were several things that I found very interesting and also very heart breaking from the results of their research. In reading that children also had to work and many of them had to migrate away from their families in order to gain more income for their families, I found this to be such a tragedy not just for the childhood that these children do not have the opportunity to experience but also for their families who are so desperate for the financial means to take care of their families that they have no choice but to send off their children to work. This is just one of the major tragedies of poverty. In addition, one of the things that this research looked at was the generational cycle of poverty in families and one of the things that they found as a contributing factor was social indebtedness meaning that some women especially felt bound to their marriages for example. In reading this I thought that this was a very interesting factor to look at because I think that community involvement could help eradicate situations just like these. In that regard, the last thing that I though was really important to mention was the lack of sufficient government involvement to not only eradicate but to also intervene in a manner that prevents the cycle of poverty from continuing to occur in the next generation. I think these are important things that we need to look at because these are things that don't just affect education but they definitely affect the quality of life that these people get the opportunity or don't get the opportunity to have.
